Provide a summary of the project or program:
The Louisiana Food Bank Association is comprised of the Five Feeding America Food banks serving every parish in Louisiana. Together they provide food for more than 609,000 individuals every year through over 900 community and faith-based organizations in communities across the state.

These funds will be used by five food banks to purchase food from Louisiana vendors to distribute to state residents who are “food insecure” –those who have limited or uncertain access to nutritionally adequate and safe food. In Louisiana an estimated 780,000 residents fall into this category and struggle to put food on the table at some point during the year.
The funding will be used to mitigate the statewide impact of the on-going economic crisis, long-term poverty, and unemployment in Louisiana. Louisiana Food Banks have seen a decrease in Federal commodities by half between 2011 and 2012. This has strained the resources of food banks and is a continued trend that challenges food banks to meet the needs of Louisianans. Food purchased through this program will be distributed based on need throughout all 64 parishes in Louisiana. This will ensure that state funds are used in an equitable manner to serve the needs of Louisiana citizens. In addition, the use of the funds to purchase only Louisiana food products benefits the Louisiana economy and ensures that these dollars remain in the state.

What is the entity's public purpose, sought to be achieved through the use of state monies?
The public purpose that will be achieved through the use of state monies will be for the Louisiana Food Bank Association to provide additional resources to the five Feeding America food banks to help meet the food needs of food insecure Louisianans. Research has shown that food security is related to improved worker productivity, higher educational attainment, and improved health outcomes. These are critical issues for Louisiana now and into the future.

Annual funding from the State of Louisiana will allow the member food banks to meet a significant portion of the documented needs of Louisiana citizens facing food insecurity. Feeding America’s Map the Meal Gap study estimates that 784,000 Louisianans are food insecure.

What are the goals and objectives for achieving such purpose?
To achieve the purpose of providing food to the five Feeding America food banks in Louisiana, the goal is to obtain annual appropriations from the State of Louisiana. This funding will be divided among the five Feeding America food banks and will help:

•Increase the quality, variety and nutritional value of food available to meet the needs of the food insecure people in Louisiana
•Strengthen the coordinated hunger relief response to disasters through implementation of a statewide preparedness plan
•Distribute food purchased through state funding in accordance to need in all 64 parishes in Louisiana

What is the proposed length of time estimated by the entity to accomplish the purpose?
           12 months 2016-2017
