Provide a summary of the project or program:
This funding will be used to support our Congregate Meals program. Senior hunger is a real problem in Webster Parish. When we worked our budget for the coming year we had only enough funding to provide 100 meals. To stay within that budget we had to average the number of meals served at our meal sites. Each senior center is not allowed to go over their assigned amount. This allows us to feed within our budget constraints. The extra funding we are applying for would help us feed the additional people needing to eat. We are having to turn people away. These seniors are faced daily with having to make decisions on whether to eat, buy medicine and just how high or low they can set there thermostats in their homes to keep the utility bills down. For most this is a difficult decision compounded by little or no family to help. Our meals provide 1/3 of their dietary requirement. To some this is there only meal.

What is the budget relative to the project for which funding is requested?:

What is the entity's public purpose, sought to be achieved through the use of state monies?
Our purpose is to promote the dignity and independence of older persons, and to help society prepare for an aging population. It is our responsibility to serve as an advocate for older people at the local and state level, and to oversee the development of an comprehensive and coordinate system of care that supports the goal of enabling the elderly to remain in their own homes and participate fully in community life. Our focus targets the special population of 60 years of age and over with emphasis on rural isolated low income individuals, minority populations, individuals with highest social need and the disabled populations. This will save state funds that would be spent on nursing home care.

What are the goals and objectives for achieving such purpose?
Our goal is to improve the health, economic and social need of the senior population. The Webster Council on Aging would provide the nutritious noon meal that would meet 1/3 of their daily dietary allowance,( this is the only meal some seniors receive), identify any other sources of need for that senior in the form of Medicaid, Medicare premiums, Food stamps, Commodities, Utility assistance, Mental health services if needed, available housing, prescription drug assistance or help navigating the paperwork for all these sources. For some the senior center is a home away from home because they do not have to raise or lower their thermostats at home to remain at a comfortable body temperature. For others it is socialization they receive, education on topics that concern them and having contact with others.

What is the proposed length of time estimated by the entity to accomplish the purpose?
           On-going
