The Revolt1811 Arts and History Gallery is the vision of local visual artist, educator, and community advocate/activist Derron Cook, Sr. Its mission is to create a safe space and learning environment where the arts and history of African Americans and the African diaspora can be shared, nurtured, and cultivated for generations to come. The gallery welcomes all persons from all backgrounds to appreciate, acknowledge, and gain insight into the African American community's invaluable contributions in building this nation and the world.

The gallery's mission is to help all Americans understand how their lives are shaped by African American history and culture, and how American values like resilience, optimism, and spirituality are reflected in it. The collections include art, documents, and material culture from many periods of African American history, including slavery, Reconstruction, and the civil rights movement. The gallery also hosts public programs, symposia, and exhibitions that use interactive media to help visitors explore African American history and culture.

What is the entity's public purpose, sought to be achieved through the use of state monies?
The public purpose of the Revolt1811 Arts and History Gallery, sought to be achieved through the use of state monies, is to foster a more complete and accurate understanding of American history and culture by highlighting the profound and often overlooked contributions of African Americans and the African diaspora.
State funding would enable the gallery to serve as a vital educational and cultural resource, a safe space for dialogue, learning, and reflection. Its purpose extends beyond mere exhibition; it aims to use arts and history as tools for community enrichment, social cohesion, and the preservation of a crucial, yet sometimes neglected, part of the American narrative.
Key public purposes include:
Inclusive Historical Education: To provide all citizens, regardless of background, access to a comprehensive understanding of African American history, from the period of slavery and Reconstruction through the Civil Rights Movement and into contemporary society. This ensures that a broader, more inclusive version of history is accessible to the public, enriching the educational landscape of the state.
Promoting Civic Values and Dialogue: By showcasing how core American values like resilience, optimism, and the pursuit of justice are profoundly reflected in the African American experience, the gallery helps citizens connect with these shared values. It serves as a forum for important public conversations about race, history, and identity, contributing to a more informed and empathetic citizenry.
Preservation of Material Culture and Art: To acquire, preserve, and showcase significant art, documents, and material culture that might otherwise be lost or inaccessible. This ensures the physical evidence of African American history remains for future generations of scholars and the general public to study and appreciate.
Economic and Cultural Development: The gallery serves as a cultural anchor in the St. John and River Parishes area. State investment supports local economic development by driving cultural tourism and providing educational opportunities for residents, thus enhancing the quality of life and cultural vitality of the region.
Showcasing Local History with National Significance: To specifically document and present the unique, yet nationally significant, history of local African Americans in St. John Parish and the River Parishes (e.g., the 1811 German Coast Uprising). This connects local heritage to the broader American story, demonstrating the local roots of national movements for freedom and equality.
Interactive Public Engagement: To fund engaging and interactive exhibitions, public programs, symposia, and publications that utilize modern media to make history accessible and relevant to a 21st-century audience, inspiring active learning and appreciation.
Through these efforts, state monies would support the gallery in its mission to demonstrate how African American history and culture are inextricably linked to, and shape, the lives and histories of all Americans, ultimately contributing to a more unified, informed, and culturally rich Louisiana.
