Provide a summary of the project or program:
Believing that the essential and transformative powers of art and the natural environment are central to a thriving future for all, A Studio in the Woods (the Studio), a leading artistic and academic residency program in the Gulf South region, is dedicated to forest preservation, science-inspired art education, and supporting artists and scholars who are tackling the challenging issues of our time with power and imagination. During this period of profound tumult and uncertainty, the Studio’s mission is more relevant than ever: fostering creative responses to the challenges of our age by providing retreat to artists, scholars, and the public in a protected forest on the Mississippi River in Orleans Parish. In 1969, Lucianne and Joe Carmichael bought the site upon which the Studio now stands, ultimately transforming the bottomland hardwood forest into an artistic and academic retreat – a true source of creative inspiration and education. The Studio was officially founded in 2001, and the Carmichaels donated the property to Tulane University three years later. The Studio is supported by Friends of A Studio in the Woods (Friends), a 501(c)(3) organization, separate from Tulane University, with a standalone Board of Directors that raises funding for all the artistic, environmental and community educational programming. Since 2001 the Studio has hosted nearly 300 residencies for artists and scholars, providing time, space, support, and a stipend to facilitate and champion the creation – and dissemination – of new work.
The Studio believes that the changing relationship between humans and the environment is the defining issue of our time, and focuses on interrelated areas of programming: residencies for artists and scholars, forest restoration, and science-inspired art education for children and adults. The Studio’s work is based on the premise that southern Louisiana is a microcosm of the global environment, manifesting both the challenges and possibilities inherent in human interaction with urban and natural ecosystems. The Studio’s residencies are thematic and grounded in the interplay between humans and the natural world. Aside from creating compelling pieces of art, literature, music or academic research, our residencies serve as the catalysts for new ideas and public discourse around the issues that matter most to individuals living in the Gulf South. During and post-residency, artists and scholars are supported to share their work within the broader community, thereby enhancing the Studio’s impact.
The Studio cultivates opportunities for citizens of Southeast Louisiana to connect with the woods, artists, and scholars through creative public engagement, summertime youth programming, and an annual festival, FORESTival: A Celebration of Art and Nature. The Studio’s founders were deeply committed to outreach and public education. We continue their legacy by inviting people in to experience the forest and its power to nurture and inspire.
The Studio’s community-driven events typically attract approximately 1,500 people annually to the site; participants include K-12 students, university students, and community members who visit, attend or otherwise engage in Studio’s innovative arts and environmental initiatives. Offsite, Studio’s publicly engaged programming and artistic output touches over 5,000 community members each year. More importantly, perhaps, are the untold number of individuals who are impacted by the innovative works of art and groundbreaking pieces of scholarly research that are created within the woods and exhibited or applied elsewhere.

Vision
We envision a world where the essential and transformative powers of art and the natural environment are central to a thriving future for all.
Values
• Wonder: We center art, inquiry and nature to conjure the sublime and open ourselves to new imaginations and perspectives. We embrace curiosity and uncertainty for their creative magic and power to engender self-awareness and growth.
• Care: An authentic commitment to care propels our protection of place and people. We serve the needs of artists and scholars to allow ample freedom to create. Through tending to our surroundings, we nurture stewardship of our environmental legacy.
• Inclusivity: Through art we reveal and revere the beauty of all living things. We make space for and cherish the plural identities of each and every individual. We proactively strive to elevate disempowered voices and stand against systems of oppression.
• Interdependence: We facilitate intimate human connections to the earth, others, and ourselves, and foster interdisciplinary bonds to generate shared understandings. Honesty, esteem, and value for each other drive our collaborative efforts.

What are the goals and objectives for achieving such purpose?
The Studio’s work is based on the premise that southern Louisiana is a microcosm of the global environment, manifesting both the challenges and possibilities inherent in human interaction with urban and natural ecosystems. Aside from nurturing compelling creative works, our residencies serve as the catalysts for new ideas and public discourse around the issues that matter most to individuals in the Gulf South. This funding period, the Studio will have successfully implemented residencies for approximately 45 artists and scholars, including Rising: Climate in Crisis Residencies focused on environmental issues, Replenish Residencies for local BIPOC artists and culture bearers, Bulbancha Residencies for Indigenous artists with a connection to Louisiana, and Scholarly Retreats for Tulane and Xavier faculty. Special Collaboration Residencies this upcoming year include a partnership with Prospect New Orleans to host a TBA artist to create a work for Prospect.6, a new collaboration with artist New Orleans native Imani Jaqueline Brown exploring environmental racism and Cancer Alley, and a continued project with former resident ChE entitled The People Can Fly, a multi-part series inspired by an iconic folktale that describes the liberation of enslaved peoples who fly away from a plantation. We will host free public programs in collaboration with resident artists, as well as the 13th annual FORESTival: A Celebration of Art and Nature, which welcomes the Greater New Orleans community to the woods. We will also host Kids in the Woods summer camp for twenty 7-11-year-olds in partnership with Harriet Tubman Charter School, as well as nature-based programs led by Ecologist David Baker.
