Provide a summary of the project or program:
This funding request would provide programming and exterior lighting for The 18th Ward’s youth sports facilities, an innovative partnership that provides much needed interventions in the lives of New Orleans’ youth. The project can make a significant difference in offering positive youth programming, community revitalization, and pathways to success via counseling and vital job training opportunities. The project builds upon the successful track record of Columbia Parc, which transformed a public housing development into a vibrant, internationally acclaimed, mixed-income neighborhood of 685 residences. By leveraging previous investments and partnerships, this initiative demonstrates a commitment to sustainable community development and positive social impact.
As you know, many New Orleans youth face high poverty rates, poor physical health, a significant achievement gap, and a high percentage of youth disconnected from work and school. The 18th Ward is a leading organization working to address these challenges. And provide “cradle to college” resources. The Fields are adjacent to 685 residencies developed by The Bayou District Foundation, bringing significant investment to serve New Orleans youth citywide.

What is the entity's public purpose, sought to be achieved through the use of state monies?
The 18th Ward's public purpose is to provide low-cost, low-barrier sports training, youth development and community engagement for youth citywide. By creating "cradle to college" programming for disaffected and opportunity youth citywide, The 18th Ward connects high risk kids to employment training and job opportunities.
The 18th Ward has successfully fundraised for the Community Football Fields, with a $250,000 in-kind contribution of land, a $250,000 contribution from the NFL Foundation which provided the turf. The request for lighting and programming will provide gap funding to ensure that youth can play later into the afternoons and weekend evenings-- providing vital additional programming opportunities.

What are the goals and objectives for achieving such purpose?
New Orleans continues to grapple with a stark increase in juvenile crime, including upticks in juvenile arrests for firearms-related charges, a surge in juvenile jail populations, and, tragically, increases in murders involving juvenile victims. Last year, 22 children were murdered, a 15-year high. As you know, New Orleans youth face high poverty rates, poor physical health, a significant achievement gap, and a high percentage of youth disconnected from work and school.
The goals and objectives for achieving such purpose are to install year-round lighting to facilitate completion of this project and provide programming to serve opportunity youth.

What is the proposed length of time estimated by the entity to accomplish the purpose?
           10 months
