           For over a decade, DSEF’s Music & Cultural Education Program has taught our city’s youth the history of New Orleans cultural traditions. With the help of African dance and drummers, benevolent and social aid & pleasure clubs, the New Orleans brass band community, Mardi Gras Indians, and several infamous Jazz legends and preservationist, this organization has successfully taken students on a fascinating and historical journey through New Orleans history. An Arts Education is vital in the comprehensive and preliminary development of a child’s mind. And so, we aim to improve the confidence, knowledge, and integrity of New Orleans youth.


The objective of this program is to utilize music and other cultural forms to educate New Orleans youth on the history of this great city. In educating the city’s youth, DSEF hopes to instill a greater appreciation of New Orleans’ inimitable culture. Despite one’s level of cultural literacy, knowledge and fulfillment can be attained from this historical journey. In the face of past and future political attempts to marginalize our culture and traditions, this ethnologically driven program structure offers a sense of self-worth and understanding to the community in which it serves. As a city with one of the most underperforming school systems in the country, this program creates a conduit for our local musicians and cultural icons to become role models and agents of change for our youth.

What is the entity's public purpose, sought to be achieved through the use of state monies?
          The purpose of the Dinerral Shavers Educational Fund is to become an active force in the New Orleans community by creating life change opportunities that will positively teach New Orleans youth a genuine appreciation for the city’s deep and inimitable culture. To help students discover their divine purpose and to embody the confidence needed to defeat their fears and achieve their dreams. DSEF also aims to counter the culture of violence by awarding New Orleans youth with opportunities through scholarship, education, arts, music, and culture.

What are the goals and objectives for achieving such purpose?
          In 2025, DSEF plan to serve over 100 youth through its Music and Cultural Education Program. In an effort to meet the community where they are, this goal will be reached by partnering with schools, nonprofits and community organizations to host our Music and Cultural Education Curriculum.

A second goal is to host an annual Music and Cultural Series in the Park as our finale event, where over 100 youth and families can gather to enjoy cultural workshops, food, crafts and live entertainment.
