Provide a summary of the project or program:
We are a first-year public full-French immersion charter school in Sunset who depends on French speaking International Associate Teachers (IAT) as instructors. According to the Minimum Foundation Program: "Any city, parish, or other public school system or school employing a Foreign Language Associate or a graduate of the Escadrille Louisiane program shall receive a supplemental allocation from State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education of $21,000 per teacher. Of the $21,000 allocation, $20,000 shall be allocated to the school where the teacher is employed and the funds used to support the total cost of the teacher salary, and the remaining amount shall be associated with costs of VISA sponsorship pursuant to State Board of Elementary and Secondary Education regulations.”

Our school employs 3 IATs, and having this $20,000 per teacher ($60,000 total) was critical to our 2021-2022 budget. We found out once the school year started that we would not be receiving this funding because it is not allocated until year 2, though we had not be told that was the case in any of the documentation received. We are requesting this funding to ensure that our IATs are paid according to their contract.

What is the entity's public purpose, sought to be achieved through the use of state monies?
The monies will immediately go back to our school and its students. École Saint-Landry is a tuition-free, public, French immersion charter school, open to all children living anywhere in Saint Landry Parish. Our mission is to prepare students from the Acadiana region to be academically proficient, bilingual, and globally competent. Our school closes the gaps of academic achievement and supports the local community in their efforts to preserve and revitalize at-risk cultural assets by offering an innovative, research-based French immersion education to students. We are dedicated to this motto in our continual efforts to play an important role in our community’s revitalization.

What are the goals and objectives for achieving such purpose?
We propose a school that, in addition to having a rigorous program guided by high expectations, is made unique by characteristics that are both shown to be beneficial to all students as well as craved by our community.

Our school is defined by the following differentiating pillars:

French-Language Immersion: The use of an immersion language pathway gives students a rigorous academic training as well as both the intellectual and cultural benefits of bilingualism. Our school has partnerships with organizations such as the Council for the Development of French in Louisiana through which we will be able to recruit teachers who are native French speakers. This will support our language immersion program.

Extra-Curricular Community Engagement: One of the central purposes of our use of a French-immersion program is to cultivate a strong sense of community among our stakeholders and within our school. We will reinforce this characteristic central to our school by engaging all of our students in extracurricular community service projects.

Diverse Student Body: Our school is committed to having a socioeconomically and racially diverse student body. There is a large body of data demonstrating that socioeconomic and racial diversity is beneficial for all students and, in particular, at-risk students.

What is the proposed length of time estimated by the entity to accomplish the purpose?
