           BREADA
Big River Economic and Agricultural Development Alliance (BREADA) is a nonprofit organization with a 27-year history of supporting Louisiana’s family farmers and connecting our community with fresh, locally-grown food. BREADA operates the Main Street Market, a brick and mortar marketplace located in downtown Baton Rouge in the state-owned Galvez Garage.
Main Street Market (Market)
BREADA manages the Market as a service to the community and the state.
Commercial kitchens were purposefully not included in the Galvez and LaSalle State Buildings to allow the Market to provide these services.
Over 50 businesses have been incubated in the Market.
The Market supports farmers who travel from 17 parishes every Saturday.
Sales from BREADA’s farmers markets allow farmers to earn a sustainable income and continue farming land in rural parishes.
The markets draw an average of 2,000 people every Saturday within the Baton Rouge region.
Legislative Request for the Market
The Market is undergoing a renovation after a $1 million investment from the State of Louisiana to update and address maintenance items after 20 years in operation.
To complete the renovation and ensure a functional facility, an additional $500,000 is needed.
The renovation will update and address maintenance items after 20 years in operation.
The approximately 8,000 square foot building includes permanent stalls for businesses, pop up vendor spaces and a fully-equipped teaching kitchen.

          Big River Economic and Agricultural Development Alliance (BREADA) is a nonprofit organization with a 27-year history of supporting Louisiana’s family farmers and connecting our community with fresh, locally-grown food. The Main Street Market, located at 501 Main Street in downtown Baton Rouge is undergoing a renovation after a $1 million investment from the State of Louisiana to update and address maintenance items after 20 years in operation. In order to complete the project and ensure the facility is operational for customers and vendors, an additional $500,000 is needed with BREADA being responsible for locating and securing those funds.Main Street Market is located inside the Galvez Garage, a state-owned building. BREADA operates the Main Street Market as a service to the downtown community and provides food access opportunities to state employees. Commissary kitchens were purposefully not included in the Galvez and buildings in order for Main Street Market to provide this service to state workers. The Main Street Market not only serves the Baton Rouge community, but it also supports farmers who travel from 17 different parishes every Saturday to participate in the Red Stick Farmers Market (also powered by BREADA). Sales at markets allows these farmers to earn a sustainable income and continue farming land in rural parishes. The markets draw an average of 2,000 people every Saturday, with shoppers traveling from neighboring parishes to attend the popular event.

What are the goals and objectives for achieving such purpose?
          The goal of the project is to complete all necessary renovations and upgrades so that the Main Street Market facility is fully functional and of service to state employees, downtown residents and businesses, farmers, and over 2000 weekly visitors to the Red Stick Farmers Market

Contract with architect to complete design of interior of Main Street Market
Work with contractors to install necessary electrical equipment
Purchase furniture, fixtures, and equipment to provide seating areas for state employees and patrons
Install audio/visual equipment for educational cooking demonstrations
Provide signage and wayfinding for public use
