Provide a summary of the project or program:
“Food Insecurity”. An estimated 683,110 people in Louisiana live with food insecurity, 234,120 are children. Food insecurity is defined as an absence of continued access to nourishing foods. Louisiana has one of the country's highest rates of food insecurity, especially among children. In the city of New Orleans, this struggle has been magnified over the past few years due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This amounts to roughly 1 in 7 people in our state struggling to provide a healthy meal for themselves or their household.

The growing number of US food deserts and sky-high grocery bills, which are remnants of COVID-19 and an ever-growing national inflation. This has affected many local communities and families in numerous ways. Many families are struggling to provide nutritious meals for their families. For example: Single mothers can only afford to buy cans of Vienna Sausage and SPAM instead of fresh chicken, at the supermarket, especially in New Orleans where there is an all-out effort, with no end in sight, to stretch individual and family grocery budgets beyond its limits. In today’s economy, across this nation, a $100 dollars’ worth of groceries will only buy a small percentage of essential groceries compared to Pre-COVID prices. In other words, the amount of money spent for two weeks of groceries Pre-COVID will only last a few days in Post-COVID time for a family of four. Inopportunely, it can be said, food desert hunger is outpacing budgets for groceries at a phenomenal pace and children are going hungry, especially in New Orleans.

More so, our beloved New Orleans is not a third-world country, but some of its inner-city communities are food deserts and resemble a third-world country. However, even as the city has maintained its tourist-driven, world-renowned status of distinctive music, Creole cuisine, and its annual celebrations and festivals, most notably Mardi Gras, New Orleans haven’t escaped its new truth that existed before and after Hurricane Katrina but is made worse by the food deserts and food insecurity caused by COVID-19. NOLA’s crime and poverty compounds its documented issues with no clear solution. To the point, there are no supermarket chains in the Lower 9th Ward of NOLA and the closest grocery store, in some cases, is a Walmart and some Lower 9th Ward citizens are known to walk two or three miles or take three city buses to get their groceries. At a time of growing need in this truth or space, community-focused organizations, like ours, have swung into action to help, but your generosity is required.

Does your organization have any outstanding audit issues or findings?  No

If 'Yes' is your organization working with the appropriate governmental agencies to resolve those issues or findings?
          Not Applicable

What is the entity's public purpose, sought to be achieved through the use of state monies?
Our goal, which will be impossible to achieve without State of Louisiana support, we are planning to donate the funding requested to purchase 500,000 meals through ‘game changers’ who have consistently demonstrated extraordinary exertions and compassion in addressing the critical challenge of New Orleans’ food deserts and insecurities.

Each organization has expressed its particular financial needs to be able to continue their good work to reduce hunger as the food deserts and inflation has taken a toll on the NOLA poorest. To make matters worse, most food delivery services, like UBER, which is a popular and preferred option for many NOLA Residents, Post-COVID, do not accept food stamps. Consequently, this widely used, efficient mode of shopping has been shut off to the poor and vulnerable who rely on the government assistance program for grocery purchases at a time when such community services are needed the most to close a devastating gap.

What are the goals and objectives for achieving such purpose?
Our primary goal is to the address the worsening conditions of placing healthy foods at the reach of all NOLA citizens, intentionally or unintentionally, the long-term impacts are becoming seriously detrimental since New Orleanians have higher rates of high blood pressure, obesity, and diabetes more than the national average, and the compounded unjust global food system (grocery stores are red-lined due to crime) is making individuals more susceptible to illnesses and other punishing vicissitudes.

Above all, our efforts are an economic stimulus because it strengthens the nation’s education systems and provides enrichment for students outside the classroom, thereby building up critical deterrents against taxing issues like poverty and food deserts in places like New Orleans.

What is the proposed length of time estimated by the entity to accomplish the purpose?
Seven months to raise the funding to donate 500,000 Meals on January 5, 2025.
