Provide a summary of the project or program:
           This funding will help provide a match to the Save America's Treasures Grant for restoration of the 1926 G.B. Cooley House in Monroe. This will include interior and exterior restoration of the house, replacement of mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, installation of information technology. This will permit the site to be used for community meetings, educational tours, and other functions to help the site sustain its continued use and maintenance. The Cooley House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places at a level of national significance, which made it eligible for the National Park Service Grant. Interpretation of the site will include the importance of the Cooley Family in the health and economic benefits of the region as well as the importance of the architects, Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin, both former employees of Frank Lloyd Wright. They designed Canberra, the capital city of Australia, and worked on three continents.

What is the entity's public purpose, sought to be achieved through the use of state monies?
          The mission of The Cooley House Foundation is to provide educational outreach regarding preservation, architecture, and regional steamboat history to the citizens of Northeast Louisiana. The Cooley Family operated steamboat packets from Monroe to New Orleans. G.B. Cooley's knowledge of steam continued with his Monroe Steam Laundry and the systems incorporated into his house, from steam heating to a steam shower. The restored G.B. Cooley House will be used for meetings by and for the public, as well as the City of Monroe. Educational tours about the house, architecture and history of the region will be offered on a regular basis.

What are the goals and objectives for achieving such purpose?
          Our goal is to replace the mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems and incorporate new information technology into the Cooley House, to make it functional again. Failing exterior stucco systems will be repaired and interior finishes will be returned to their original appearance. The Cooley House Foundation has made progress with the building, including a roof and flooring replacement. These funds will count towards our required 1:1 match for the National Park Service grant and will allow the restoration to become a reality. Fundraising for the remainder of the project budget is ongoing and an architect has been hired to begin the design. One potential for continued sustainability of the site will be to allow short-term rental of the Cooley House. This will allow people to experience the house in the way it originally functioned - as a house, while learning more about its importance. Proceeds from the rental will support the continued maintenance, operation and educational outreach of the site.
