What is the entity's public purpose, sought to be achieved through the use of state monies?
Recent research studies have shown that a gain
of 10 - 20 pounds resulted in an increased risk of coronary heart disease. Funding will help us to continue hosting the largest Health and Wellness Expo in North Louisiana. The Fit for Life Health and Wellness Expo host over 2,000 students and 2,500 adults exercising, receiving health checkups, donating blood and athletic competition.
Given the magnitude of the health and fitness problem facing Americans today, particularly children, it is imperative that more high-level emphasis be placed on improving the
health and fitness of our citizens. Comprehensive media campaigns and programmatic wellness initiatives designed to draw more attention to this national dilemma are long overdue.
According to a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services 1993 report it was noted that regular exercise and fitness activity has been shown to significantly reduce morbidity and mortality rates stemming from chronic diseases.
Millions of Americans suffer from chronic illnesses that can be
prevented or improved through simple regular physical activity. The report also found that fourteen percent of all deaths in the United States were attributed to ineffective or no physical activity patterns and poor diet. Sedentary lifestyles were cited as the cause of another twenty-three percent of deaths in the United States.
What are the goals and objectives for achieving such purpose?
It is well known that obesity greatly exacerbates many chronic conditions such as hypertension and elevated cholesterol. And overweight children also experience more than usual social stigmatization, discrimination, and poor body image. Since overweight children become overweight adults it is crucial that these alarming trends be turned around at an early age.
Since regular physical activity has been shown to significantly reduce the risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, colon cancer, high blood pressure and other chronic diseases, it must be concluded that, on average,
people who are physically active outlive those who are inactive. Still, despite the known benefits of good diets and physical activity, most adults and children continue to lead sedentary lifestyles and practice unhealthy eating habits. Real and meaningful health, fitness, and wellness strategies, programs, and initiatives are vital and necessary if we are to reverse these sobering statistics. The foregoing makes it crystal clear there is a need to encourage a more active lifestyle among the American people.
The goal of a more active population will prove challenging and will require a commitment on the part of individuals, families, workplaces, and communities.
Our goal is dedicated to improving the health, fitness and wellness of Louisianans, especially the citizens of Shreveport-Bossier cities.
Given the magnitude of the health and fitness problems facing Louisianans today, particularly children, it’s imperative that more high level, consistent emphasis be placed on improving the health and fitness of our citizens.
What is the proposed length of time estimated by the entity to accomplish the purpose?
