Provide a summary of the project or program:
The Legacy Donor Foundation (LDF) is dedicated to raising awareness and educating Louisiana about the critical need for organ, eye and tissue donation. Founded in response to the growing number of individuals waiting for transplants, we work to inspire individuals to register as donors and understand the life-saving impact of their decisions.

Louisiana is facing a crisis due to the shortage of organs available for transplantation, with almost 2,000 individuals waiting on a life-saving transplant and over 100,000 nationally. Sadly, sixteen people are dying each day while waiting, and another person is being added to the list every eight minutes. This is enough individuals to fill Tiger Stadium. Can you imagine that stadium full of people, with everyone waiting for someone to save their life? They all hold on to hope that they will receive a life-saving transplant, but for some, the organ they need to survive won’t come in time.

While the number of transplants performed each year has increased, the rate at which people are added to the waiting list continues to rise. Furthermore, only 1% of potential organ donors are eligible due to factors such as medical history and circumstances of death, leading to less than 1% of deceased individuals becoming donors. Encouraging people to register as donors is imperative so those who CAN save lives can do so. With transplant waiting times averaging 5 years or more, we must also increase awareness about the option of living donation.

With almost 90% of individuals on the waiting list in need of a kidney transplant and an average wait time exceeding five years, we recognize that simply encouraging registration as donors is insufficient to halt the expansion of the waiting list. A living donor can donate one kidney to someone in need. We are working to increase education about living donation, facilitate connections with our state’s transplant centers, and empower those on the waiting list to seek potential donors among family members or friends.

Since 1999, LDF has been actively addressing the rising number of individuals on Louisiana’s transplant waiting list by educating citizens about the critical need for organ, eye and tissue donation. Through public education and awareness activities, LDF promotes organ donation and fosters universal acceptance of this life-saving gift.

Ninety-five percent of donors in Louisiana register through the Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV), where every person is asked if they would like to register as an organ, eye or tissue donor. Our long-standing partnership with the OMV plays a crucial role in our awareness efforts, as it provides a tremendous opportunity to educate individuals obtaining or renewing their driver’s licenses and non-drivers needing state-issued IDs.

To assist the busy OMV staff in fulfilling their responsibilities by asking the question, “Would you like to be a donor?” LDF provides OMV and PTA partners with educational materials. We ensure the staff are equipped with the necessary information to share with customers regarding the decision to become donors. Given the limited time OMV staff have to discuss this critical topic with each individual, these resources enable customers to educate themselves and feel confident in responding to questions about registering as organ, eye and tissue donors.
