Provide a summary of the project or program:
PC’s Water Quality Program benefits the waters of the Pontchartrain Basin, the public, and the local economy through maintaining the favorable condition of the lake and improving the condition of tributaries. This program aims to understand the current and always changing water quality conditions, identify remedies and reduce impairments as-needed, and keep the public informed about all activities. Our Weekly Recreational Water Quality Monitoring (aka, the Basin Wide Monitoring Program) monitors twelve (12)recreational sites for physiochemical parameters [turbidity, conductivity, salinity, dissolved oxygen, temperature] and microbial indicators [fecal coliform and Enterococci] around Lake Pontchartrain. PC monitors water in terms of criteria set by the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality (LDEQ) and Environmental Protection Agency(EPA). Additionally, PC has a Quality Assurance Project Plan (QAPP) approved by the EPA for this activity. Additionally, The New Canal Lighthouse and Education Center, which was built in 2013, is the only place on the lake’s southshore for residents and visitors to learn about our relationship with water as “touch the coast.” Financial support can help us continue to grow and evolve as we see the need to offer interactive learning experiences that reach all audiences and educational learning styles and preferences. We need support to assist with evolving with the best practices in museum and education, ongoing building and site maintenance to continue to handle large audiences. Since opening the renovated Lighthouse as a museum in 2013, we have hosted more than 45,000youth and adults, including students from 60 schools and visitors from 40 states to learn about important issues related to water quality and coastal sustainability. In addition to daily tours led by Conservancy educators and 20volunteer docents, we provide numerous hands-on STEM learning opportunities for students. STEMOutdoors, our flagship program, helps over 4,500 students annually throughout a 16-parish region to develop interest and skills in environmental management and coastal restoration through hands-on activities.

What is the entity's public purpose, sought to be achieved through the use of state monies?
Pontchartrain Conservancy (PC) is the only comprehensive organization addressing the complex relationship of our culture with the water that surrounds us and vigilantly balances the needs of the environment, commercial industries, and residents with innovative solutions. PC’s mission is to drive environmental sustainability and stewardship through scientific research, education, and advocacy. The collaborative efforts of the community lead by PC have supported the removal of this natural resource from the impaired waterbodies list. The impact of that work has been largely based on the continuity of information. However, we are at risk of losing support of this historical and continuous data set. Although Lake Pontchartrain and its surrounding area continue to face environmental challenges, the Lake and its basin have made a tremendous comeback. We communicate this information to the public, educating students and visitors through the area, state and nation via our education center about the importance of Louisiana to the U.S. Much of this success is due to interested and concerned citizens who want a clean, healthy lake and basin for this and future generations, all of which is only possible with financial support.
What are the goals and objectives for achieving such purpose?
With funding, PC can:- Continue to conduct monitoring activities at 12 sites once per week, creating over 600 site-specific data sets;- Continue to monitor around Lake Maurepas; - Share data with other agencies and entities upon request; - Analyze the data to assess trends in waterbodies and further investigate sites showing poor water quality or significant changes in water quality;- Disseminate water quality information to the public on a weekly basis through two means: PC’s website(www.scienceforourcoast.org) and the regional newspaper (The Advocate) with 100,000 subscribers;- Be responsive when public interest in water issues requires PC to use the Internet further, through reporting on social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.), television, and other media outlets.- Continue to educate students and visitors through the area, state and nation about the importance of Louisiana to the U.S.
What is the proposed length of time estimated by the entity to accomplish the purpose?
1 year
