Provide a summary of the project or program:
Description of building and renovations: KID smART’s Center for Arts & Education will be located in the 7th Ward in New Orleans, at 2533 Columbus St, just behind historic Bayou Road. KID smART completed the purchase of this building in August of 2024. Initially constructed in 1938, the two-story wooden schoolhouse served as an elementary school until August 26, 2005, the Friday before Katrina struck New Orleans. The 10,000sf building was renovated into office spaces in 2018 and is in good condition, with a new roof following Hurricane Ida in 2022. The building purchase price of $1.45 million is $136 per square foot. The additional capital expense budget was set in collaboration with Eskew Dumez Ripple, Gootee Construction, and ArtSpace. The total campaign goal is $5.5 million, which includes the facility purchase ($1.45 million), renovation ($2.4 million), and expanded programming ($1.7 million.) Most construction costs will make the building more accessible by adding an elevator and a large ground-floor entryway. Furniture, fixtures, and equipment ($500,000) is the most extensive line item in this area to accommodate the new space used for training and studio classrooms. We have been fortunate to receive pro bono services through the EDR Day of Service to create preliminary layouts, renderings, and a design proposal for the full brief at ½ the price of other firms’ bids.
Description of impact: The Center for Arts & Education will be KID smART’s home and a hub for the city's arts education community. By expanding our space, we will grow our annual impact from 3,200 to 8,200 children - nearly 3x the lives changed. In addition to 6 classroom studios, meeting and training space will be available for other community arts and culture groups. Limited affordable space is a challenge for many community-based organizations, and we plan to build partnerships to allow the space to be used by many within the arts and education sector. The scope of the Arts & Education Center will extend far beyond KID smART’s current reach. While we will continue to work with public schools and expand our Creative Schools programming, we will build our portfolio and impact through highly increased outreach events for families, out-of-school time programming for youth, our Bloomberg Arts Internship program, and the addition of daytime Creative Aging programs.

The KID smART Center for Arts & Education will allow KID smART to utilize resources in ways most beneficial to students, teachers, and the community. With a devoted team of experts committed to joyful engagement in learning through the arts, establishing this facility will provide the ability to reach students beyond school hours and grow our impact exponentially. New Orleans students deserve access to high-quality arts programs that nurture their creativity and enrich their lives. It's been proven that students with access to arts education are five times less likely to drop out of school. The center will cultivate a connection to the arts and nurture relationships between community members. We envision a space that all people will find welcoming and inspiring—a place to learn together, explore their artistic passions, and flourish creatively. The Center will also provide KID smART with a space to offer workshops and classes to people of all ages (from early childhood to creative aging) and further community connections.

What is the entity's public purpose, sought to be achieved through the use of state monies?
KID smART’s mission is to engage children and educators in dynamic, creative, and relevant learning through the arts. What are the goals and objectives for achieving such purpose?
KID smART is working with world-renowned nonprofit consultant Michael Kaiser on a five-year strategic plan. Within the plan is the vast expansion of KID smART programming to almost triple the number of people served within the first year to 8,200. Strategic program expansion will include:
Monthly Educator Trainings and Workshops
Afterschool Programs
Summer Camps
Creative Aging Programs
Multidisciplinary Arts Classes and Workshops
Community Outreach and Artmaking Events
Convening and Exhibition Space
Early Childhood Arts Classes
Homeschool Partnerships

What is the proposed length of time estimated by the entity to accomplish the purpose?
KID smART purchased the facility in August 2024 and is working with Eskew Dumez Ripple Architects and Ryan Gootee Construction to break ground on the renovations in August 2025. If we are able to stick to the proposed timeline, programming at the Center for Arts & Education will commence after Mardi Gras 2026.
