Provide a summary of the project or program:
Hearts of Hope is seeking funding to support the continuation of Pediatric and Adolescent Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) services in Lafayette, Louisiana. This program provides specialized medical evaluations and forensic evidence collection for children and adolescents who are involved in investigations of sexual abuse or assault.
Pediatric and Adolescent SANEs are registered nurses with advanced training and certification in conducting forensic medical exams for minors. Their responsibilities include the collection and preservation of forensic evidence, photographic documentation, assessment and treatment of injuries, screening and treatment for sexually transmitted infections, and referrals for follow-up medical care. Their expertise ensures that medical examinations are conducted in a manner that is clinically sound, legally defensible, and developmentally appropriate for each patient.
The presence of trained SANE professionals is essential to both the healthcare and legal response to child sexual abuse. Forensic medical exams are a critical component of the investigative process and play a significant role in the documentation of injuries and collection of time-sensitive evidence. These exams are also an opportunity to identify and address any immediate and long-term medical needs related to the abuse.
In the Acadiana region, access to Pediatric and Adolescent SANE services remains limited. Hearts of Hope provides one of the only programs in the area offering these services in a timely and coordinated manner. Without this funding, the sustainability of the program is at risk, which could result in gaps in care and delays in forensic evidence collection—both of which can negatively impact investigative outcomes and the health of the child.
By securing financial support for the Pediatric and Adolescent SANE program, Hearts of Hope will be able to continue providing expert medical and forensic services to children and adolescents throughout Lafayette and surrounding parishes. This ensures that young victims of sexual abuse and assault receive timely, professional, and appropriate medical care during a critical point in the investigative process.
