Provide a summary of the project or program:
General operating budget to be used to upgrade and/or replace exhibits. Most of the current exhibits were purchased at the time of the current location’s opening in December 1998. The entity is working with local businesses and donors to identify supporting funds to offset the expense of exhibit repair and replacement. Funds would be used to repair and/or purchase state-of-the-art STEM-themed exhibits. The upgrade is expected to provide increased revenue through an increase in general admissions. In addition, it is anticipated that out-of-area visits will increase, providing a positive economic impact benefit through hotel and dining experiences. What is the entity's public purpose, sought to be achieved through the use of state monies?
Sci-Port Discovery Center, a 92,000 square foot educational resource located in downtown Shreveport since 1998, seeks to upgrade a variety of exhibition areas. Exhibits will provide interactive science and technology information/activities. The intent is to provide refreshed/replaced exhibits which will provide a “WOW” factor for visitors from across the United States and will include infographics, artificial intelligence, virtual reality and custom built structures designed to engage guests as they progress through the interactive exhibit spaces. In addition, many of the original exhibit collections will be refurbished if possible. Replacement of mechanical components, exterior upgrades and signage development. The educational activities provided with each exhibit will be linked to Louisiana State Standards.
If funding allows, a temporary, traveling exhibit will be leased to attract visitors from areas within, as well as, outside of the Ark-La-Tex area. Traveling exhibits have proven to draw large numbers of visitors. It is anticipated that a traveling exhibit would provide a positive economic impact for northwest Louisiana through increased hotel and dining experiences.
