          The YMCA partners with local public schools and other public entities to offer drowning prevention programming and Safety Around Water at no cost for need-based participants. In Louisiana, drowning was the third leading cause of injury-related death in children ages 0-14 for the 2017-2019 period, according to the most recent Louisiana Child Death Review Report from the LDH. According to the CDC, formal swimming lessons can reduce drowning by 88%, and it is urgent to expand access to these life-saving lessons.

What are the goals and objectives for achieving such purpose?
          The goals and objectives of the Y's drowning prevention work includes: increase awareness to educate the public about the risks and consequences of drowning, encouraging children and adults to learn how to swim since formal swimming lessons can significantly reduce the risk of drowning, offer lifeguard certifications to ensure safe rescue techniques, improve access to water safety resources, collaborate with local authorities and lifeguards, and support research and data collection to understanding the burden and to develop evidence-based prevention strategies to address this public health issue.
