Provide a summary of the project or program:
The Hazel Hebert Benoit Center for Homemaking Studies is planned for location on the site of a Property at 409 West Hudspeth St. in Welsh. This proposal plans to complete the renovation of the subject site for the establishment of a program to support homemakers. Partial renovation, locally funded, has already been completed. This grant will add required cooking and storage facilities.
Originally housing the Welsh High School Home Economics Department and outbuilding, the subject site was abandoned following the relocation of the High School in 1959. Purchased by family members of Hazel Benoit around 2002, the structure was donated to the Welsh Museum in her memory in 2013. Mrs. Benoit taught Home Economics in Welsh for thirty-two years beginning in 1945, changing the lives of thousands of Welsh families.
Renovated, this building is expected to provide a site to help renovate families by providing the support and knowledge required to establish and maintain home living. Skills such as home financial management, cleaning, cooking, self-care, child development, care for the elderly and self-care will be targeted from this location. Adjacent to the new Jefferson Davis Parish Library, planned for opening in May 2025, programs at this site can be expected to offer the community opportunities for skill acquisition that are currently missing from education systems. The Library and the Friends of the Welsh Museum have verbally agreed to shared access.
