Provide a summary of the project or program:
The Nutrition Program of the New Orleans Council on Aging is two-fold. This program provides both Congregate (C-1) meals and Home delivered (C-2) meals or as they are more commonly referred to as “Meals on Wheels” to the elderly sixty (60) years of age and older in Orleans parish. The Congregate Meals Program (C-1) provides a meal to an eligible participant at a nutrition site, senior center or other congregate setting.

These services are designed to maintain or improve the physical, psychological, and social well being of the elderly through the provision of appropriate nutrition services. Hot meals are designed to meet one-third (1/3) of the daily recommended dietary allowance as indicated by the food and nutrition board of the National Academy of Sciences.

Eligibility Requirements:
Seniors 60 years of age or older, or the spouse of an eligible participant
Residence in Orleans Parish
Handicapped or disabled persons who are not 60 years of age, but who reside in a housing facility occupied primarily by the elderly at which the congregate nutrition services are provided can participate in the congregate meals program, but only at that location.

The New Orleans Council on Aging (NOCOA) exists to protect the rights, promote the well being, and enhance the self-esteem of New Orleans elderly by generating opportunities for self-reliance and independence.

The New Orleans Council on Aging is a private, non-profit corporation which serves as the Area Agency on Aging for Orleans Parish. The agency is responsible for insuring that a comprehensive and coordinated assortment of social, recreational, educational, and nutritional services are provided to persons aged 60 and over in the City of New Orleans.

The services these funds are requested for, are designed to maintain or improve the physical, psychological, and social well being of the elderly through the provision of appropriate nutrition services. Hot meals are designed to meet one-third (1/3) of the daily recommended dietary allowance as indicated by the food and nutrition board of the National Academy of Sciences. with the funds requested we will be able to feed 138 seniors for one year.

What are the goals and objectives for achieving such purpose?
This program assists the New Orleans Council on Aging to meet it's Vision:

To have quality supportive services accessible to older adults in New Orleans so they are able to age in place with dignity—at home, in their communities.

In particular, the Meals on Wheels program allows seniors who are home bound to stay in their homes. The program does this by not only providing a healthy meal to the senior, but also offer social interaction they might not get on a regular basis, as the driver delivering the meal checks on them regularly. Therefore, this program assists them to stay independent and in their own home instead of institutionalize care.

What is the proposed length of time estimated by the entity to accomplish the purpose?
