What is the entity's public purpose, sought to be achieved through the use of state monies?
Early detection of cancer is pivotal in saving lives, catching the disease in its earliest and most treatable stages. In Louisiana, addressing the burden of cancer remains a critical public health challenge. Unfortunately, our state has one of the nation's highest cancer mortality rates, largely due to factors such as low health literacy, limited access to early detection screenings, insufficient primary healthcare coverage in certain regions, and a high prevalence of late-stage diagnoses that hinder successful treatment outcomes.
Our initiative plays a crucial role in advancing healthcare and promoting equity across Louisiana by aiming to reduce cancer mortality among underserved adults. Cancer health disparities disproportionately affect minority and underserved populations in our state, manifesting in high incidences and mortality rates of malignancies like triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC), endometrial cancer, and advanced prostate and kidney cancers. These disparities are often rooted in social determinants such as poverty, unequal healthcare access, educational disparities, and stigma, which collectively contribute to health inequities.
Within Louisiana, significant disparities in cancer outcomes are notably prevalent among Black or African-American populations, who constitute a third of the state's residents. Unfortunately, this group experiences the highest cancer death rates and shortest survival rates compared to any other racial or ethnic group in the United States. Specifically, Black or African-American individuals in Louisiana face a cancer mortality rate of 210.0 per 100,000, compared to 180.0 for Whites nationally.
These disparities underscore the complex interplay of social, economic, and cultural factors that influence cancer risks and access to high-quality healthcare. Addressing these challenges is crucial, particularly for underserved populations such as low-income individuals, rural communities, and the uninsured.
Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center’s (MBPCC) Early Detection and Education program is dedicated to overcoming these barriers by hosting free, community-based cancer screening events every month throughout the year in underserved neighborhoods. These events are strategically held in accessible settings during non-work hours to ensure convenience for adults without insurance or regular healthcare providers.
What are the goals and objectives for achieving such purpose?
Our overarching goal is to lower Louisiana’s disproportionately high cancer mortality rate by addressing critical gaps in prevention and early detection. To achieve this, we are focused on three key objectives: (1) delivering no-cost screenings for five major cancers—breast, prostate, oral cavity, skin, and colorectal—to medically underserved populations; (2) ensuring that 100% of individuals with abnormal screening results receive personalized patient navigation to guide them through follow-up care; and (3) expanding access to cancer prevention and early detection education across communities. Through these efforts, we aim to identify cancers at their earliest and most treatable stages, improving treatment outcomes and increasing the likelihood of long-term survival.
What is the proposed length of time estimated by the entity to accomplish the purpose?
1 year
