Provide a summary of the project or program:
Northshore Food Bank is seeking funds to expand its existing Kids Weekend Food Program for the 2025-2026 school year by opening and managing a Student Choice Pantry located in each of the eight St Tammany Parish Public high schools that will support high school and junior high students in the Kids In Transition (KIT) program.
In collaboration with St Tammany Parish Public Schools, Northshore Food Bank currently operates a Kids Weekend Food Program in seven Title 1 elementary schools throughout the parish. This program provides nutritious, easy-to-open food items to children during summer months.
Throughout the 2024-2025 school year, our program has served 930 students at these schools.
We plan to extend this successful program to incorporate the current 229 high school and junior high students in St Tammany Parish Public Schools’ Kids In Transition (KIT) program, through a Student Choice Pantry program. Students in the KIT program are those identified as having a lack of fixed, regular or adequate housing. They may also be an unaccompanied youth who does not reside with a legal parent or guardian.
We will work with STPPS to open a Student Choice Pantry at each of the parish’s eight public high schools to specifically serve KIT students. A Student Choice Pantry at each high school will be stocked with items each KIT student can personally select each day to meet their nutritional needs and will accommodate their living arrangement – easy to prepare, microwaveable items.
These Student Choice Pantries will stock numerous nutritional food items for easy to prepare dinner and snacks during the week and weekends, which will supplement the loss of school breakfasts and lunches during the week.
Currently there are approximately 229 KIT students at the junior high and high school level in St Tammany Parish public schools. We will work together with the three Mental Health Providers (MHP) that represent the 8 high schools to manage the program at the school level – Salmen, Slidell, and Northshore High Schools in Slidell, Pearl River HS in Pearl River, Fontainbleau, Lakeshore, and Mandeville High Schools in Mandeville, and Covington High School in Covington.
MHPs at each high school will also support the KIT students at each of their junior high locations.
They will be responsible to work with us to track student use, as well as keep us informed of inventory and additional needs. No personal student or family information will be shared with Northshore Food Bank.
According to Feeding America, 1 in 6 (16.6%) children in St. Tammany Parish experiences daily hunger, and lack of access to healthy food can negatively impact a child's physical and mental health, academic performance, and future economic opportunities. The program's goals are to improve the overall health of vulnerable children, ensure food-insecure students have necessary nutrition, and support development during a crucial growth period.
Additionally, by providing food on a daily basis for these vulnerable students, the program enhances food security for both the students and their families.

Northshore Food Bank has been working with the St. Tammany Parish School System since the Kids Weekend Food Program’s inception in 2022 to identify the public schools with the greatest need. Together, we have set the parameters of the program to address weekend meal gaps for elementary-age children and promote better health, academic readiness, and long-term prospects for participants.
By expanding the program to now serve students in the KIT program in the junior high and high schools for 2025-2026 school year, Northshore Food Bank aims to reach more food-insecure youth, providing them with essential nutrition to support their health, education, and future success.
Funds will be used to purchase necessary food items throughout the school year to stock these pantries.

What is the entity's public purpose, sought to be achieved through the use of state monies?
Northshore Food Bank’s mission is to provide access to basic needs.
In following this mission, we hope to build on the success of our Kids Weekend Food program to support more food-insecure and vulnerable youth throughout St Tammany Parish.
Feedback from St Tammany Parish Public Schools administration, staff, and families indicates that our current Kids Weekend Food Program that supports elementary-aged students is highly effective. Children eagerly anticipate their food bags each Friday, looking forward to the nutritious meals they will receive over the weekend. This anticipation and the regular provision of food have led to notable positive changes in student behavior.
School administrators have observed anecdotal improvements in focus and concentration during classes, increased levels of physical activity, and higher academic performance, with many students achieving better grades.
Our program impact extends beyond just providing food; it fosters a more conducive learning environment and supports the overall well-being and development of the students.
By expanding to provide essential food assistance for older students in the KIT program, we help set them up for success in the classroom and as they start to venture into the workforce, by improving educational outcomes and overall well-being of St Tammany youth.

What are the goals and objectives for achieving such purpose?
The overall goal of Northshore Food Bank’s Student Choice Pantry is:
• To provide regular and consistent nutritional food assistance to high school and junior high school students who may lack stability in their current life outside of school.
• To address childhood food insecurity
• To improve educational outcomes and overall well-being of St Tammany youth

We aim to reach this goal by:
• Collaborate with Mental Health Providers (MHPs) with St Tammany Parish Public School to set-up, open and maintain a Student Choice Pantry at each of the eight public high schools.
• Keep Student Choice Pantries stocked by delivering essential food items to serve high school and junior high students enrolled in the parish’s KIT program.
• Serve high school and junior high students enrolled in the parish’s KIT program.
• Work closely with MHPs who will ensure KIT program students are aware of their Student Choice Pantry.
• Work with MHPs who will track pantry use, identify and make us aware of inventory needs.
• Annually review program for effectiveness and success, and make any improvements necessary.
