What is the entity's public purpose, sought to be achieved through the use of state monies?
The purpose of this project is to renovate and expand the warehouse 3202 Baldwin Avenue in Alexandria to increase the capacity of the Food Bank of Central Louisiana to acquire, warehouse, and distribute food and grocery products to the food insecure people in the eleven parishes we serve. Despite the Food Bank's steady growth over the years, we could not have predicted the exploding demand for our services since the pandemic began. In 2020, we distributed approximately 11 million pounds of food,
and the high demand for our services has not abated. While inflation and high food costs have made matters worse, chronic
poverty and food insecurity have existed across the region for decades. Recent economic stress has served to shine a brighter
light onto communities of high need and low access where consistent services typically have never existed. Today, the Food Bank serves nearly twice as many families as it did in 2019. The funding will support the renovation, construction and buildout of a facility that distributes healthy food, delivers nutrition education, and community-based services in a low income rural region.
What are the goals and objectives for achieving such purpose?
The current facility will be renovated during the first two phases of the project. Phase three and four include new construction of coolers and freezers, a teaching/demonstration kitchen, and parking lot. The Food Bank has raised $1.9 million from private funders and have multiple funding requests submitted. The Food Bank of Central Louisiana's board of directors and staff leaders are committed to raise the necessary funds to complete the project.
What is the proposed length of time estimated by the entity to accomplish the purpose?
3 years
