Provide a summary of the project or program:
For nearly three years, the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank (GBRFB) and Three O’Clock Project (TOP) have worked together to
develop a shared vision for a Community Kitchen within the Food Bank that will transform how South Louisiana addresses food
insecurity, nutrition, and community health. GBRFB has been serving the food insecure in our 11-parish service area for over 40
years. We acquire and distribute food to over 140 partner agencies, providing over 11.9 million meals annually. TOP is a local
nonprofit with a mission of increasing access to healthy, nutritious food for at-risk youth and their families.
The project will transform approximately 5,000 square feet within GBRFB’s existing facility into a commercial production kitchen,
culinary classroom, and workforce training center. The Community Kitchen is intentionally being designed for the future. Initial
operations are expected to produce approximately 500 healthy meals per day, with the capacity to grow to 5,000 to 7,000 meals
per day as food rescue efforts expand and additional after-school, summer feeding, healthcare, and community partners join the
initiative.
By combining GBRFB’s regional infrastructure, volunteer network, food distribution system, and relationships with hundreds of
community organizations with TOP’s expertise in food rescue and healthy school feeding programs, we are building more than a
commercial kitchen. We are creating a long-term community health resource that will turn rescued food into nutritious meals,
expand child nutrition programs, advance Food Is Medicine initiatives, reduce food waste, and create pathways to employment
in the culinary and food-service industries.
The Community Kitchen will allow us to move beyond simply distributing food. We will be able to increasingly focus on what
food we provide, how it is prepared, and how nutrition can be used as a tool to improve health outcomes.

What is the entity's public purpose, sought to be achieved through the use of state monies?
When individuals and families lack consistent access to nutritious food, they face greater challenges maintaining their health and
managing chronic conditions. Food access is an important social determinant of health. Louisiana ranks towards the bottom of
many of America's Health Rankings. The state is currently ranked #50 overall, #47 for food insecurity, #39 for food and vegetable
intake, #50 for poverty, and #44 for unemployment. Louisiana is ranked #6 in the nation for overall food insecurity. 1 in 6
individuals, including 1 in 5 children in our 11-parish service area are food insecure and the average poverty rate is 18%. The
implementation of the Community Kitchen will address these needs and improve the wellbeing of our community. The
Community Kitchen will allow GBRFB and TOP to reduce food waste by recovering food that would otherwise be thrown away.
The Community Kitchen will provide workforce development with culinary training and food certifications, improve health
outcomes with prepare medically tailored meals, and will feeds more kids after school and over the summer. Without the funding
for this project, the services provided by GBRFB and TOP will continue to meet as much of the short-term needs we can, but we
will be unable to expand services and create large-scale change for our community.

What are the goals and objectives for achieving such purpose?
The Community Kitchen goes beyond responding to hunger by addressing underlying factors that contribute to poor health. It
will allow rescued food to become nutritious meals. It will also strengthen the connection between nutrition and health
partnerships, linking these efforts for greater impact and more positive health outcomes. Over the next five years, the Food Bank
plans to add partnerships and increase services, with a goal of decreasing the need for dependance on short term
assistance/resources.

What is the proposed length of time estimated by the entity to accomplish the purpose?
           5 years
